Guardian Home Details

What is it?

A guardian home is one that takes on one of our puppies as their forever family pet, but we keep the breeding rights of this dog.

What are the requirements?

  • Live within 1 hour of the Boise area

  • Plan to live within 1 hour of the Boise area for the next 5 years

  • Have no more than 2 other household pets - must be spayed/neutered

  • Keep the dog as an indoor pet

  • Have a secure, fenced, yard

  • Be willing to coordinate health testing related vet appointments

  • Provide adequate socialization and training for the dog

  • Be cooperative in frequent communication with me, Leah about how the dog is doing, and any needed appointments.

  • Must notify Star Garnet Pups every time the female is in heat

How does it work?

If you adopt a guardian dog from us, you become part of our team!

For females, we will need access to them for health testing, which is done at the vet and could be anywhere from 1-3 appointments before breeding age.

We breed when the dog has had their second heat, or when they are 2 years old. This can change depending on the dog.

When a female is ready to be bred, we will need access to for a breeding date. In some occasions we will do progesterone testing to determine when they are most fertile. If this is the case, additional vet appointments will be required.

The female is returned to you for the duration of their pregnancy (63 days) until they are about 55 days along. At that point they will come to our house to prepare for birth, give birth, and raise their puppies. The momma dog will need to stay with her puppies for approximately 6 weeks after they are born. This can change a bit per dog, depending on when they wean their puppies. After this time they are returned to you.

We breed our females every heat, and retire after about 3-5 litters. We breed back to back because more recent research is showing that this is healthier for females. This also allows us to retire earlier.

If the female fails health testing, or is otherwise unsuitable for motherhood, she will be spayed at your expense, with the breeding contract being completed. If she did complete any breeding with us, we will spay her at our expense at the time of retirement and the breeding contract will be complete and full ownership of the dog will be transferred to you.

We currently do not have any males available for a guardian home.
